This bilingual workshop invites children aged 3–6 and their families to explore the surprising links between Indian rangoli and Celtic shapes. Led by artist Shyamala Sathiaseelan, the session introduces the art of rangoli, a traditional Indian folk art where colourful patterns are created on floors to welcome guests using materials like rice flour, coloured sand or flower petals.
Participants will get hands-on with the materials. Through simple demonstrations, you will experiment with the big shapes and bold colors found in both traditions. The environment is kept warm and relaxed, allowing families to discover these cultural connections at their own pace. It is a space designed for families to share a quiet moment of making and discovery together.

Shyamala Sathiaseelan
Shyamala Sathiaseelan is a rangoli artist with many years of experience working creatively with children, adults and family groups. She shares the cultural richness of rangoli through hands-on, collaborative sessions that inspire expression, connection and joy. Shyamala has delivered workshops in libraries, schools and community festivals, adapting her approach to suit different ages, settings and group needs. Passionate about making art accessible, she creates welcoming spaces where participants can explore colour, pattern and tradition. Her work continues to encourage people of all backgrounds to engage with rangoli as both an art form and a meaningful cultural experience.
