Mother Tongues Connections

Meet Gemma Crowe
Gemma Crowe

My name is Gemma and I work in Dublin. I am currently painting a lot and I also have a children’s book coming out this year. I completed a BA in Architecture from DIT and a postgraduate certificate from Ballyfermot College in Art.
I run an art programme in Cuffe Street, Dublin city centre, through a youth work service where I teach three times a week. I love people, they are the centre of my work and my inspiration 99% of the time.

How would you describe your last year in a nutshell?

My year has been exciting – I joined a new art studio, I finished my first book which I wrote, illustrated and produced with the help of Éabhlóid Publishing. I hosted an event with Mother Tongues Festival which was great fun. I finished my MA in Sociology from UL also this past year.

What is the role of art in your life right now?

I currently sell my art on instagram @gemmafaux_art. My classes that I used to teach have come to a standstill due to covid 19 so I am painting now more than ever and really enjoying that unforeseen opportunity!

What projects are you working on right now?

Currently I am working on a collection of paintings which I would love to get into exhibitions. I also have a great idea for a children’s book and I am looking for a publisher.

How did Covid-19 affect your work and your lifestyle?

My art programme is currently not able to run unfortunately! I am also not able to access my recently rented studio space at Block – T in Rialto which I was really enjoying.

Do you think the current pandemic has changed you? If so, in what way?

I think the pandemic changed me as I now realise I was rushing around too much before perhaps. I hope that now I slow down and appreciate the communities and the people I was lucky enough to see and meet each day before this. I miss meeting new people also.

what is the biggest challenge for the creative sector right now?

The biggest challenge will probably be funding artists as events and classes have mostly stopped.

What do you look forward to the most right now?

Painting each day is a joy!
